Community is all en-COMPASS-ing

I’ve been traveling to Nantucket for the past decade for the beaches, time with friends, and an occasional much-needed breath of fresh air. About a year ago, I quit my job to pursue my passion full time (flowers) and decided to make the move to Nantucket where I’m now a year-round resident (crazy!).

Every year, instead of establishing a New Year’s resolution, I choose a single word to focus on all year long. I find that a word as opposed to setting a goal, helps me direct my energy and maintain my priorities in spite of the ensuing chaos and uncertainty that every new year brings. For 2019, I chose the word COMMUNITY. During my first winter on the island, I was driving past the Compass Rose in downtown and inspiration hit…this is how this “Flower Flash” was born.

Community is all enCOMPASSing (see what I did there?), and the community of Nantucket is an especially powerful one. I wanted to design something solely for those who stick it out on the island all year long, something fleeting and beautiful to be appreciated by the ones who inspired me to move here in the first place, who work hard to preserve this beautiful little island 30 miles out to sea, and who continue to inspire me every day. To those people – and to all of the incredible sponsors who made this flower flash happen– I’m eternally thankful. I dedicate this unique installation to YOU. A perfect example of what a community can do when people come together to share their passions, talents and support one another.
