How I Met Katie

In March last year, I made my way over to Long Island City to participate in a Master Class with Katie Davis of Ponderosa and Thyme. The class consisted of a small group of women, (five students, including myself) who were assisting Katie with a semi-permanent floral installation for an art exhibition called, FLORILEGIUM, at Eleventh Street Arts

The exhibit lasted a month so Katie sourced various dried products that would last the duration of the exhibit (more about recycling some of that product here on Nantucket, later). I loved every second of the experience, not just because of the intimate size of the group, but because we were creating art for others to enjoy over a long period of time.

Before I became a florist only a few short years ago, I followed Katie on her social platforms because of her love for travel. It was her fusion of travel and flowers that drew me to her, and of course her organic, ethereal style. The most wonderful thing about meeting in Katie in person was that she was truly the woman I’d been following online for so long. Her authenticity and genuine nature was REAL and that was the most refreshing thing about her.

What was supposed to be a one day Master Class in Long Island City, turned into a long weekend exploring the NYC flower markets with Katie and her husband, totally unplanned and unexpected. I will never forget that time and the memories we forged there, including trying to navigate our way through the NYC subways and failing miserably! Little did I know back then just how much installation work I’d be doing, setting a solid foundation early on has helped me SO much in the world of installations and pushed me to be creative about the materials I use.

Here on Nantucket, I use a lot of silk florals to withstand the harsh elements. Something I never anticipated doing. I strongly feel it’s important to invest in these kind of experiences like the Master Class, at least once in your career, the people you meet and the things you learn stay with you and you know never know what will come of them!
