May: Cherry Blossom
The Language of Flowers on Nantucket
By May, Nantucket begins to spring to life.
The wind is still cool, and spring still feels a little shy, but suddenly, there are signs of bloom everywhere. Along South Water Street, the cherry trees begin to open, scattering petals like pink confetti, while the daffodil heads crinkle and turn brown. It is one of those seasonal handoffs that reminds us beauty does not need to last forever to be meaningful.
This month, our featured flower for The Language of Flowers on Nantucket, a season-long campaign designed for local hotels 21 Broad and 76 Main, is the Cherry Blossom.
In the language of flowers, cherry blossoms symbolize fleeting beauty, renewal, new beginnings, mindfulness, and soft resilience. Their bloom is brief, but that is part of their magic. They arrive, transform their surroundings for a moment, and then let go.
For us, they feel like the perfect flower for May on Nantucket.
After the long gray of winter and the yellow joy of April’s daffodils, cherry blossoms invite us into a joyful kind of spring. They ask us to notice what is happening right now: the petals on the sidewalk, the light returning to the harbor, the first warm mornings, and the island beginning to wake.
Cherry blossoms have long been associated with the beauty of impermanence. In Japan, the tradition of hanami, or flower viewing, celebrates the arrival of cherry blossoms each spring. Friends and families gather beneath the trees not only to admire them, but to pause together in the presence of something that will soon pass. The blossoms are beloved because they are temporary. Their fragility is what makes them feel precious.
There is something deeply “Nantucket” about that. So much of island life is seasonal. The fog lifts. The daffodils fade. The cherry blossoms bloom. The boats return to the harbor. The restaurants open their doors. The streets begin to fill. Each moment has its own beauty, and each one asks us to be present before it changes again.
As part of this season-long collaboration with the hotels, we are highlighting a flower each month that reflects Nantucket in that particular moment. Through art, storytelling, experiences, and floral installations, guests are invited to experience the island not just as a destination, but as a living, blooming place.
This month's partnerships include some exciting opportunities for guests and for the larger community:

May’s cherry blossom is a reminder that some of the most beautiful moments are also the most temporary, perhaps that is why we remember them.
